Medical Education in the Republic of Armenia
The medical education system in the Republic of Armenia operates under the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Education and the Law on Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education. Fully aligned with the European Higher Education Area (the Bologna Process), our national framework is designed to ensure that Armenian healthcare professionals meet rigorous state standards and remain highly competitive in the global medical community.
The development of a medical professional in Armenia is composed of progressive, interconnected tiers—from foundational vocational training to advanced clinical specialization and lifelong learning.
Provided by state and private medical colleges, this tier is the foundation for allied health professions.
Target Professions: Nurses, midwives, dental technicians, dental hygienists, and pharmacists.
Qualification: Vocational Diploma (Secondary Professional Education).
Higher medical education is delivered through intensive, integrated academic programs at accredited universities and institutes.
Integrated Programs: Unlike standard degree tracks, medical doctors and dentists complete an uninterrupted program lasting 5 to 6 years.
Qualification: "Degreed Specialist" (Medical Doctor / MD), recognized at NQF Level 7 (Master's equivalent).
Upon acquiring their MD, physicians must undergo supervised, specialized clinical training to earn the right to practice independently.
Clinical Residency (Ordinatura): The mandatory pathway for clinical specialization (1 to 4 years of highly practical training).
Academic Research (Aspirantura): Leads to Candidate of Medical Sciences (PhD equivalent) and Doctor of Sciences.
Graduation and residency are only the beginning. Under regulations enforced by the Ministry of Health, Armenia implements a legally mandated, credit-based Continuous Professional Development (CPD) system.
To maintain their medical licenses and active registry status, practitioners must undergo periodic recertification every 5 years by accumulating CME credits across three distinct categories:
